    Default foggy Eurasian Oystercatcher

There is quit a lot of out-of-focus subject matter in this photograph which personally I like as it helps create atmosphere!

However, there is also a foggy edge along the white side of the bird to the right. I wonder what is causing this? It happens in quite a few of my images.

    Equipment used ...

    Canon 1D Mark 111 with a 500mm lens with a 2X 11 extender
    ISO 200; 1/500'th @ f8.0

Amano- All parts of this image show signs of camera movement/shake including the edge of the bird's breast. At 1000mm focal length, you have to bring all guns to bear on the problem, which includes good long-lens technique, a sturdy tripod (I know some can hand-hold this setup!), and a reasonably high shutter speed. The 1D III is a very clean body so you could have used 1/1000s at ISO 400 and 1/2000s at ISO 800 with very little to no loss of image quality from noise. In any event it is generally better to have a pin-sharp, noisy image, than a blurry noise-free image.

A little too out of focus for me so I agree with John. Sorry otherwise the shot would have been beautiful. Is the camera able to autofocus with a 2x tele; on the Nikon, I think autofocus is out.
