Excellent head position here, like being able to see the hole, but bird not in it. Pretty good shooting angle for a woodpecker, they are often shown with pretty steep angles.
The trunk on the left is so bright that it really competes with the bird. I would be seriously tempted to burn it in with a soft brush to tone down the luminosity.
It might also benefit from a little crop in from the left, which would also help with the overpowering nature of the trunk on the left.
I think the head could stand a bit more sharpening.
Terry, I really like the head turn in this and the texture of the tree. Randy gave some great advice. To me, the entire image seems a bit overexposed. I might turn down the exposure first and then burn the side of the tree.
Thanks very much for the input, Randy, Todd, Kurt, and Brendon! Here's the repost. Sorry it took a while, dinner got in the way. I darkened the overall exposure a little, bumped up the saturation just a bit, and lightened the darker part of the tree on the right side of the bird. I also cropped just a some off the left and sharpened the head a small amount.
Thanks again for taking the time to critique and suggest!
This is significantly better! I might still do a bit more lowering of the luminosity of the trunk on the left, esp. on the LLC which is the brightest, but overall much better on the repost.
Randy, thanks again for your help. I'll work on it a bit more. I really appreciate all the time you take to make your comments and suggestions for all of us.
Pieter, thanks very much for commenting. I enjoy your posts!
