Default Young Whitetail Deer checking me out.

While photographing Common Redpolls I felt a "presence" behind me so I turned around and here was what I found...a young curious Whitetail Deer had quietly snuck up to about 30 feet from me - no doubt wondering what this lone photographer was doing out so early in the cold outdoors.

After a few images this individual bolted right back into the woods, only to come back a few minutes later with four more of its friends...but all too shy to emerge from the thickets.

Canon 40D + 100-400L at 220mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/400s., f/6.3, ISO 800, +1 EC, natural light, handheld, FF. I do wish for a tiny bit more room below...

Love the slightly off center pose here. It fits perfectly with the subtle opening in the BG trees.

A beautiful shot, Daniel. It looks in great condition and you caught the eyes nicely. Composition looks good as well. Appears to be a young one.

    Daniel:

Very nice, techs and comp. Agree about a sliver more below.

Were you wearing camo, or in a blind of any kind?

    Cheers

I agree about a little more room at the bottom, but it is a really beautiful image. I love the deer's rapt attention toward the camera and the almost monochrome BG in contrast to the color of the deer.

Thanks Randy. No camo or blind...just standing very still close to some bird feeders. This area is heavily populated by deer, but they do not normally come out of the woods and approach when people are out and about - at least not at this location.

    gorgeous portrait Daniel
love the image quality and crisp feel here

perhaps if there was a tad more space below the feet the compo would feel more balanced?

Thanks a ton Morkel, I'm glad you like it! As for your question, yes it would...I did mention it in my accompanying text that I wished for more down there.

Excellent image Daniel, I enjoy the contrast of the deer and the snow, very different to our dry environment. Lovely pose and big ears

Agree on your self critique Daniel about more room, but still a very 'sweet' image. Colour & detail is spot on, as expected. Nicely handled sir.

Not much to add but great winter feel to this image. Agree with comment about more room below. Techs look good. Well done.

I really like the detail and the wintery scene behind the deer. Neat story...I always find whitetails more skiddish than mule deer, so nice to see such a close capture.
