    Default CHRISTMAS RAM

Late Christmas afternoon near Gardner, Mt. in Yellowstone Nat. Pk.. Liked eye contact. Would have liked a hoof or two and rocks, instead of dirt, in the foreground. Nikon D200, Nikkor 200-400, TC 1.4, f/7.1, 1/640, +0.67, iso 200 with tripod. Reduced noise and darkened bg. Selectively sharpened ram.

I agree, the eye contact makes the image compelling. Very nice subject placement. The white in the background is a tad distracting, but what could you do? What a great way to spend Christmas!

    Gary,

Perfect composition. Like the head turn and eye contact. Working very well here. May be list a little more space at the bottom.

"f/7.1, 1/640, +0.67, iso 200" Your techs are good nice shutter speed and exposure comp looks fine too considering the over all image.

One thing I would like to mention is loss of details due to noise reduction (I assume). Generally high amount of noise reduction on subject will kind of destroys the details and flattens the subject.

Very nice composition. Great head angle and eye contact.
The BG bothers me; the edges of the whiter areas look over processed. I tried a few things but did not get any better results. Hopefully one of the more experienced members could.

Thanks to all for C & C. Agree with all critiques. The background was an issue with the original having bright white patches of snow with dark timber. Tried to darken snow and lighten timber. Another issue was the sizeable crop. Decided to use this one to work on fledgling CS5 PS skills. Spent most of the Patriots - Jets game trying to learn the finer points of refine edge while selecting the ram. Have posted the original image.

So the noise was introduced almost completely by the crop, if shot at ISO 200, correct?

Allen, i believe you're right on that. Those large crops will kill the quality of an image every time - even when our ISO is down low. I have a 10 MP camera and I watch as I do the initial crop in Camera RAW - if I lose more than 3 MP I really start to worry about what the final will look like. Anything lower than half and I know it's probably not going to be the quality I want - period. So keep that in mind...this is why people spend the big bucks on those giant lenses.

You do have a beautiful pose and I'd give my eye teeth to have seen this! I'd go ahead and try a less severe crop and see if the IQ is high enough to save the image's details. It's certainly worth a try.

Jules, thanks for the comment. Will keep 30% reduction limit in mind.
