Default Pelicans - San Diego Coast

Usually the Pelicans are basking on some cliffs that are easy access. Today the gate to that cliff was locked and the Pelicans were in the shade. As the sun rose higher, we were able to get some shots, but most were too dark. I love these Pelicans, especially this time of year.

    Canon 7D 100-400 lens
    400 MM
    ISO 1250
    AP 6.3
    1/1600

I did a little adjusting with contrast and midtones in LR

    Thanks for looking.

Nice image Nancy, great interaction and eye contact of the pelicans. They are amazing looking creatures. Nice soft light and good detail. Wish your post was larger, but I think you did a great job considering the conditions.

Nancy, what a beautiful and intimate moment you have here. I'm heading out the door but I tried a few things to change up the image a little - feel free to take or leave my suggestions...

Darkened the area to the right of the bird's head to tone down the light area (poop).

Used the middle gray eye dropper in levels to correct the blue color cast by sampling the rocks below their feet until I got a color shift that I thought looked more natural.

I wanted to bring more emphasis to the face and less to the surroundings so I added a filter/render/lighting spotlight over the head/chest area letting everything else go dark around the edges, then finessed it with a mask to paint back in where I wanted more detail. See what you think...

Thank you for your kind words, Brendan.
I usually upload from Flickr and this was too large to go with the larger size. Thanks for looking.

I like the adjustments and can do all but the spotlighting of the head. On my monitor they look a bit too bright. That may be my monitor, because it is in a room that has natural light behind it. Thanks for helping me.

I adjusted this shot and tried to add a blur to the background. Is it too dark now?

It is dark, Nancy, but with the blue tint it also gives it quite a mood. It's your call...

Nancy, I like the interaction especially the look in the right pelicans eyes. I love the spotlight effect Julie did and agree with you that the bodies look too bright in her re-post. TFS

I think it is a bit too blue and there seems to be a halo where I separated the images. But I think the PP stuff is beginning to make sense. Thanks

Thanks Clyde. I do think I have to work on the PP a bit more. There is a halo effect there.
    Thanks for your kind words.

Thanks Peter. I'll keep working on it. PP is not easy yet, but I think I'm getting the hang of it slowly.
