    Hi Guys,

Had a spare hour today so went looking for Hen Harriers. Did find a couple of them but as it was raining i had to shoot very high ISO's and could not get the results i was after. Still quite pleased to get this species after wanting to photograph it for many years.

    greetings,

    Jeroen Stel

    Jeroe,

Very interesting composition with the colorful layers and pleasing look to the FG grasses. I like the placement of the Harrier as well. Certainly different then your normal composition.

I tried tweaking the processing more in the repost. Curves adjustment to add some contrast and then I used the Dodge tool to lighten up the bird. Different ways to lighten it up but I went for quick and dirty. Saturation increase too.

    Hi Robert,

Thanks for your reply. Though i like the increase in contrast for this image, the highly saturated colors are a tad too much for my personal taste as this was shot on a rainy and cloudy day.

I think the best answer would be somewhere in the middle..

    Greetings,

Nice hovering pose Jeroen. I agree with somewhere between the two, perhaps leaving the bg alone and working only the harrier and fg grass. Well done.

I like your composition very much, Jeroen. Its nice seeing the beautiful setting as well as the bird. I agree perhaps just a bit of lightening, but I wouldn't change the degree of saturation. It looks wonderfully natural.

Jeroen, I like the beautiful layered BG in this with the placement of the hovering hawk in a compositionally interesting way.
I agree with you that between your post and Robert's post I think it should be somewhere in the middle.

Hi Jeroen, Excellent environmental image with a beautiful layered background, like the windblown grass in the foreground and the hovering Harrier to complete the picture. You made the most of the conditions and I prefer your OP which captures the right mood for me.

I love the layered background and habitat, and the hovering pose. Might wish the legs were clear of the fanned tail. Agree that somewhere between the OP and the repost would nail it.

Lovely setting and BG makes for a beautiful environmental image but keep wishing bird was higher in the frame.

No problem there. When I download an image I normally have to boost saturation to as some is lost. When I did that and the curves, saturation peaked higher then I might have wished to present.

However, colors can be very saturated on overcast and rainy days. We landscape photographers love to be in the forest on such days.

I don't know if it's the fact that there is so many awesome bird photos nowadays or what, but I have noticed lately that I like more and more photos like this where the bird is just part of the picture. Call it birdscapes or what you want but I do like these a lot. Nice job Jeroen...
