Default "On the Run" - 11 Point White tail Buck

I created this image in early November here in Ottawa while standing ont eh shoulder of a road. The city has a large amount of green space with many fields, wooded areas and nature trails.

This massive buck was in an area of agricultural research land that, in total, is 16 square kilometres in size. The buck and two other big males (10 and 8 points) were contending for a doe. Apparently they had been fighting earlier in the day.

The fellow had been lying down nearly exhausted when the doe came near and then tried to move off. He followed after her at a dead run trying to herd her back. I panned the buck but unfortunately he was moving away from me. His head is not s shapr as it could be but despite that fact I still like the sense of movement here.

Sharp enough for me, especially given the apparent speed he's traveling at based on the leg positions. He doesn't appear to be angling away from you too much. I like the muscular lines showing on the body.

That you Steve. It was an exciting moment for me.

I should have removed my angle comment since I decided to change my image at the last moment. The original has the head in slightly sharper focus but was definitely angling away from me. Sorry.

Stephen - well done pan. It conveys the power and speed of the buck well. Nice muted bg too.

While it would have been nice to the head a bit sharper this would be a keeper in my files as well. Nice pan blur, I suspect you can pull a bit more detail out of the head with some selective sharpening. Well done Stephen.

Do agree with comments above, great image. It's always great when one gets the panning right

Well done Stephen, I like the sense of speed and power. I wish the head was a little sharper but still a great

picture. This is my favorite animal and have spent the last 45 years observing and studying them.

    Wonderful action Stephen,
I really like the motion blur and the warm background.

Thanks Todd. I've already played a round with it a bit but perhaps I'll try again.

Thanks Jack. It's the biggest set of antlers I've ever seen on a white-tail but I must admit I've only been trying to photograph them for a couple of winters.
