During my happy holidays, a few of us decided to visit a wetlands, 100kms from my house. I was picked up at 3.45am to be there for first light around 5.00am. We had a disastrous morning. The gates were locked, the roads were flooded, but eventually after gaining entry, I came away with this shot, which was really a grab shot. Didnt get anything else for the rest of the morning.

Hi Stu, I like the early morning light on the birds face, wing blur is also very nice. I might have crop a bit off the right side. I like the blue BG TFS :)

Hi, Stu. I can imagine that the need to catch the early morning light in South Africa is particularly urgent; the light must be intense at that latitude. Even at the early time of the morning in which your shot was taken, the whites on the heron are getting hot. The water looks good, reflecting what must have been a big blue sky above.

Stuart, looks pretty nice for a grab shot. The exposure looks good, and I love that deep blue water. Looks like he's flying slightly away from you, which is too bad, but I guess you couldn't control that :)

Nice wing position and morning lighting. Good control of the highlights which are on the verge of being too hot. I like the crop as is.

Sorry about that, Vivaldo. I'm rushing around the office this morning and didn't pay attention to your post above to know that Stuart was referring to you.

Stuart, I like the raised wings, BG and light in this one. As pointed out before the bird flying towards you would have been more impressive. But considering this is a grab shot it is great.

Pretty good light for 5:48 am! I like the sharpness. Whites look a little hot on my laptop, and I wish the bird was flying towards you.

Thank you all for the kind words.

Dudley. Yep Marievale is a mess at the moment, and we were there just before Christmas. Much more rain has fallen since then, so I dont want to know how the place looks now.

Hi Stuart, nice to get one of these in flight. Like the wing position and extended legs. Colour contrast against the blue background works well.
