    Default Long-eared Owl

This was taken near my house on the weekend. I was out on a walk at night on the frozen lake and had one of these guys flying around me. The next day I went out in daylight looking for the owl. I just had the thought to look low to the ground and there they were, two of them. They sleep in the same spot. Lighting was from the right side. I don`t mind the natural BG and feel it gives a sense of environment. Full frame with some cloning out of branches. Hope you enjoy the image.

Fabulous image, Jim. Love the direct eye contact, BG, perch with snow. Fill flash really pops it perfectly without being obvious. Well done

    Hey Jim,
Nice catch on this one. Wish we could get them more out in the open here in B.C. Nice job on the cloning too. Background looks good and not too distracting. Nice feather detail on the face and back.

Who was more surprised - you or the owl - looks like the owl:) Great stare Jim, and just love the raised ear tuffs. Lovely complimentary BG too.

WOW...what a shot Jim. loved the BG, exposure and the sharpness. Excellent flash work. If mine, I'd definitely do eye doctoring.

    Jim:

Then owl is great, deft flash work.

You do need to clean up the extra catchlights in the eyes.

I am not sure the cloning on the background is quite believable, because of the way certain sticks just seem to hang in midair, or stop in an unnatural fashion.

The image deserves another pass at the background, will really help it.

    Cheers

    Randy

Great work finding this guy, and then capturing him. Ditto the good use of flash. Comp works well; great look from the bird.

So THAT'S how the owl got its name. Thank you for the fine shot.
