Default BV on the Hooptie Deux

    Attached Images Attached Images

Clemens van der Werf (see "Mystery Photographer and Experience Level Revealed here) and I photographed with James Shadle yesterday morning on an early season Hooptie Deux trip to Tampa Bay's Alafia Banks. A good time was had by all and I got to photograph the season's first spoonbill.

This Black Vulture image was created with the tripod-mounted Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens and the EOS-1D Mark IV. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 off the blue sky: 1/1600 at f/8 set manually.

To see the next frame in the sequence (that was created in the same 1/100 sec.) and to learn which focusing pattern I used see today's blog post here.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Hi Arthur, I think I prefer this one to the one posted on your blog today. I love the wing positions here and the separation of the feet and the tail feathers. Nice work!

Andrew, I pretty much agree. But I had an important point to make with that one as you saw in the screen capture :)

That's a good lookin bird..... well kinda

I like how you managed(or pulled out) good detail in the underwing of the bird. I would have loved to have been able to see the other leg but that's asking a bit to much isn't. I'm guessing they don't fly with spread legs(they look neatly pressed together). The little head turn and eye contact is great. Looks very casual as it flew past.

    Hi Arthur,
Very nice detail on such a dark bird and with a bright sky. A great pose.
A minor comment; there are sharpening halos around portions of the wings that I would suggest removing.

Hey Artie, you captured some great detail in them blacks :) WoW look at them talons hanging out the back

PS good to know about the 45 point, I was always hesitant to use this on my MIV, however I did give it a try yesterday on some trumpeter swans in a nice blue sky, I did get good results.. I too had trouble with 45 on my MIII

Interesting pose - I rarely see these guys presented "wings up" like that, and well lit too.

I have to admit that I also like the "wings down" shot from the blog better.

Thanks Charles, Actually Andrew liked this one better:

"I think I prefer this one to the one posted on your blog today."

Different strokes. I sorta like them both. It is on the rare side when I like more than one from a flight sequence. Robert O'Toole is so skilled that he often gets 8-10 from a sequence.... Amazing.

I'm also seeing a processing/sharpening halo around the Vulture. I do like the wing up position and eye contact.

I have a hard time seeing halos (I'm getting better over time "seeing" things) but someone showed me a quick way to see if a halo is present. I took the liberty to open the image up in CS4 and move the middle levels slider up to show where the halo is present.

Ahhh OK I misread Andrew's post...

I think I have the same problem with flight sequences - usually only 1-2 keepers. I can't wait to see Robert O'Toole in action in Alaska :)

Duane and Terry, When I look at the JPEG with the calibration strip perfect, I do not see any halos on this image. (I do with some of my JPEGs as I sharpen my JPEGs generically via an action and sometimes I get some slight halos.)

Do note however Duane that we prefer that folks view the images as presented :) and not take them into Photoshop for close-up scrutiny. They are after all only relatively small JPGEGs.

In fact, in James Shadle's excellent " But wait, I don't feel qualified to critique pictures!!" thread here, he writes:

"It should be understood that when you offer your opinion on even the smallest detail, you are not nitpicking. It is attention to detail that separates good from great. At the same time, it is not necessary to enlarge the photo and critique it on elements that would otherwise be indiscernible."

No problema at all, just wanted to spread the word :)

Thank you both for commenting. And the rest of the gang too.
