    Default is this a white-tailed kite?

    january california in the tops of trees near a creek and pond

    looks like a white-tailed kite in the guide, but have not ever seen one before so wanted to check.
    no light to speak of, so this is an ISO 2000 image that i attempted to clean up.

    Yep, it's definitely a White-tailed. Judging from the broad pale edges on the wing coverts and the brown feathering in the scapulars, I'd call it a young bird.

    They hover when they're hunting, so they're fairly good photography targets. When they find their prey, they drop straight down - like they're in an elevator shaft.

    Very nice image for such a high ISO, BTW.
