In late afternoon light I photographed this Northern Goshawk as it began to attack a flock of ducks. The light areas in the background are dead tree branches.....I've tried toning them down a little but this was the best I could manage without the image looking too manipulated...

Canon EOS 7D, EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM, 1.4x TC, Gitzo GT3531 Mountaineer tripod, Gitzo GH3780QR ballhead

    1/640 sec at f/4; ISO 400

    Cropped, levels, nr, sharpening (LR3/PSE9)

Nice capture of the goshawk John. The bird does look a tad soft. I would have boosted the iso to get a faster shutter speed. :)

Photographically I guess a lot of things could probably be improved like the shutter speed, the angle of the shot, the sharpness, etc. However, this species has always fascinated me and I'm very glad to see it.

Thanks guys - the original RAW is sharp, so I guess it's my post-processing that is causing a deterioration in the image quality.....I'm still to perfect a decent LR3/PSE9 workflow...better to only use PSE 9 perhaps? Regarding bumping the ISO to 800, I am not happy with the amount of noise I get from the 7D with dark environments at that ISO - hopefully they will sort out the noise problem with the 7D MkII!

Good back light through the edge of the wings, and the goshawk pops nicely from the darker BG. With regards to noise, its better to have a sharp image and deal with noise in pp, than a soft image that you cant sharpen, with no noise. :)
