I used to battle with the whites on certain birds, but being on this site and picking up help and tips, I think Ive nailed it - I hope:). The BG here is as shot, and are distant OOF fir trees. Cant think what he wants to use the small piece of thorn bush for.

You certainly nailed your exposure and sharpness Stuart. Wing position is excellent. Maybe he's using the thorn bush for nest defense. :p Too bad about the nictitating membrane, and I wish he was angled slightly towards you. You've really come a long way with your flight photography!

Nailed it is right! Beautiful shot (Doug's comments noted). I'm curious; is this much of a crop, or close to full frame? With that lovely dark BG, and if the bird is not real large in the frame, I probably would have opted for some negative Exp. Comp. to protect the whites (if I had had time to think about it); but this looks right on the money at 0 EC. Nicely done.

Great shot. The whites look perfectly exposed and the dark background makes your subject standout.

    Stuart:

Well done re: exposure, wing position, interesting nesting material, sharpness.

Agree about the nictitating membrane, and might be tempted to do a bit of eye doctor work. Some folks would just borrow the eye from another frame in this sequence.

    Cheers

I think you cloned the nictitating membrane instead of the iris. Of course Randy's the eye doctor, so maybe we should ask him!

    Stuart:

Have to agree with Doug. The iris should be brighter, like the post. portion of the original post iris.
On your repost, it looks like you have covered the entire iris with the nictitating membrane.

    Cheers

    Randy

Lovely details in the whites. The dark bg really helps to show this off.

Well done Stuart, exposure nailed as has been said. I agree with your comments and have found these guys very difficult to expose correctly no matter what the light, will just have to keep shooting.:)
