    Default Bone Crunching Good

Taken in the Timbavati Game Reserve, South Africa. He was partially in the shade and partially in the late morning bright sun, enjoying an impala leg. I cropped from the rhs to eliminate a blown area but I also thought the tight crop worked well. I played with a more square crop too to eliminate the bright area in the upper right corner but then I lost the effect of shooting down his body. I'm open to other suggestions for the crop.

    ISO 200
HH from a safari vehicle, slight contrast boost and sharpened.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

Well done Rachel. Nice exposure on the lion with good sharpness. I like it as presented and as an alternate crop I might look at portrait coming in tight on the face, croping from the rhs.

Rachel, I like everything about this image—the eyes, the blood on his whiskers & the spot of blood on his nose, the visible fangs, his raised lip, the tight crop. It makes me glad that I am not an impala. I like images that tell a story & this certainly tells me a story. I think the techs are right on. I might consider removing the green leaves in the LRC. TFS

Great action, expression. Like the detail and scars on his nose. He's got some war stories to tell.
I agree, tight vertical crop for this one would work well.

Rachel, good sharp detail on the head, and if anything, maybe bring in from the right a touch.

I might be tempted to perhaps think about a square crop on this one Rachel. Keep the height but work from left to right. :D He seems to be happy chewing on that bone. :D

nice moment Rachel! I like the detail you achieved by going in close. I also don't regularly recommend square crops but think in this case it might work best as stated by others. Let's see it!

I would also open up the shadows just a slight notch ;)

Thanks all for the kind comments. Here's the square crop. My concern with this and with a tight vertical is that I lose the look down the body of the lion but maybe it doesn't matter.

    Thanks,
    Rachel

And for Morkel - here's the square crop with the shadows opened up a bit more (6%).

    Thanks,
    Rachel

I am for the square crop too!

I would also suggest selecting the highlights in the LL corner and toning them down.

    I prefer the sauwar crop.

You have done very well to maintain the detail giving the lighting siutation.

Thanks Robert and Russell. Robert - unfortunately I have already toned down the highlights. Any more and I feel it starts to look artificial or off. I am about to upgrade to CS5 maybe that will do the trick.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

I understand your reluctance to lose the view down the body of the lion, but I prefer the recrop. Nicely done!
