    :)

I took this yesterday at my local patch and I had never seen this species before, I love it's subtle coloration; I was trying once again to use my 1.4 converter and Canon 100-400 in poor/fair light from behind and with high ISO, this time 1600 :o. This is the only shot I think I have ever used that setting. Subject was 16 metres away across an unfrozen stretch of water with his 2 ladies.
Image is as OOC and I made no levels/exp adjustments.
SS 1/1000, handheld, USM one pass at .6, 165, 0, NR in CR5 and it was pretty noisy, F 8.0, Ev +1
    C&C welcome

Too bad about the poor light. This could have been a great opportunity.:( The lack of light hurts it and it seems soft. Was this a big crop?
Great species and well worth trying for in better conditions.

Richard, beautiful bird and I like the pose and the ice.....but there is a huge loss of details...probably by the noise reduction.

Absolutely due to noise reduction and not a large crop
Sunshine tomorrow so with any luck they will still be around.
I tried, and failed to push to whites so as to minimise noise at that ISO.
But hey thats what this is all about:)

    thanks

That is a beautiful bird and nice image. I have the same struggles with pushing whites in poor light! Hope you get more opportunities on this bird, would love to see some more shots.

I'd like to see the unprocessed version if you don't mind Richard.

    No problem Doug

Its clearly underexposed which I know has caused the noise issue
