Beautiful composition, Hazel. I like the concept and your use of drop shadow giving a 3D feel to the composition. Lovely colors and love the texture too. Just wish for a slightly better definition of the head...
I love the colors - the gradient going from cool at the top down to the warm sunset color is wonderful.
Hazel, I love the gradient BG very much. The colors are lovely. The take off pose is very nice. I agree w/ Indranil regarding a bit more detail and/ or separation in the head area.:) Nicely done.

Hazel, I like the effect you created here. As Cheryl said, it looks like a sculpture. Love the pose and BG colors. Another vote for a little more detail in the head area.

Thanks for the input, especially re the head details. I'll post the original so you can see what I was working with. I find myself conflicted between posting an avian photo and an out of the box one. I was working with filters, gradient, etc. to achieve an out of the box look rather than realistic one. yet the critique seems to come from just that. I'm not, repeat not, arguing. just trying to figure out how to work details out. Maybe the problem is simply in the original??? It was my first bird photo and so has obvious problems. Any ideas out there?
Hazel, If you started on a layer then I would add a mask to the layer and reveal the details of the eye back into the first post. It seems to be missing that kind of detail. I like the OOTB version very much.:) Your original capture looks to have a few bright spots that I would try to tone down but you did a great job w/ the capture.
