    Default Northern Harrier in flight

This is a large crop, so IQ is marginal; but I liked the way the fully outstretched wings caught the last rays of sunlight on this young Harrier. C&C appreciated.

    Bill:

Light and resultant colors in the bird are lovely.
IQ holds the image back, but I can see why you like it.

I might try a bit looser framing, which wouldn't hurt the beautiful light, and would help with the IQ a bit.

    Cheers

    Randy

Sweet light and good wing position. I agree wtih Randy on trying it a bit looser.

You are right about the IQ - feather detail suffers. Pose and composition are nice. Nevertheless, I have a soft spot for harrier hawks. So this would be a keeper for me :)

Thanks Randy and Jeff. Here's a repost with just a bit more room. Actually this is the way I originally cropped it, but started thinking it had too much empty space so I cropped again prior to the OP. Thanks for the comments and suggestion.

After looking at the two crops, I think I prefer the original. Great pose and light. Your camera settings make me think that you were significantly underexposed. I suspect you introduced some noise during exposure recovery and then ran some fairly heavy NR on the bird (it's especially noticeable in the bird's head).

Doug, I agree it looks like NR, but that's not the case. Here's the original, simply converted from the RAW file to JPEG with zero PP or exposure adjustment. Maybe the problem was that the focus point wasn't on the bird??

Bill, good flight angle with a good wingspread. Lovely warm colours from the light, and good job on achieving this. I have learnt, as exciting as the subject is, if its too far, and will require a big crop to post, I just dont take the shot. Yes, Ive had plenty.:(

Thanks Stuart. Good advice. I was trying to see how far I could reach with my new 500f4, and I guess I found my limits. I've just ordered a 1.4X, so maybe I can reach a little further.
