I have recently been on a trip to The Gambia, this is the first of a few I will be posting. I have to admit I expected photography there to have been far easier than it was. Controlling the highlights without underexposing the rest of the image and then balancing the background was sometimes quite tricky.
As ever your C&C will be most appreciated.

You did a good job considering the light here. Nice head angle, good sharpness, uncluttered background and good exposure.

Not sure what problems you had with other shots, but this one is a beauty. HA, BG both lovely; nicely exposed.

You did quite well Jonathan; excellent detail and a nice BG. I'm not sure if the top of the perch is hazy because of a leaf in front of it or because of some PP work. The key for photos with challenging lighting such as you describe is fill flash. Then you can treat the image as two separate exposures; use the camera settings to expose the BG the way you want and illuminate your subject with flash. Of course it's easier said than done! :)

Thanks for the C&C everyone. The hazy area, Doug, was a leaf. I understand what you mean Doug, and yes it is very much easier said than done. I did try to get hold of a better beamer but i couldn't get one before the trip becasue I have the older 550 flash gun as opposed to the latest 580. Hopefully some of the following images will be more evently illuminated.
