I was pleased to capture this Owl just before the sun set - first time I've seen him in enough light to photograph. (This is another frame of the same owl posted on Avian yesterday, part of the same burst.) My issue is: this is a really huge crop. I went from a 4288x2488 horiz. original to this vert. crop at 850x1080. Much more than I've ever cropped (I was pleased that at least some detail held up). Then I tried something else new; I resampled to boost the size to 1920x2482 before resizing for web and sharpening. I know the resampling can't add detail that wasn't there, but it seemed to help. Can anyone give me advice on when resampling is called for; for printing, for web presentation? Can it give at least the illusion of better detail??? When in the workflow should it be done (if at all)??? Is there a tutorial on this?? Thanks for your help and comment.
hey Bill, I think your experiment is pretty successful - that wing closest to us is wonderful. I find it harder to see the head, but don't know if that is just my pathetic eyes. beautiful picture. hope someone offers advice about resampling - it would be interesting to hear what others have experienced.
I dont have the PP experience to give any advice, Bill. I think you did a good job on this one though. Great BG colors and I think it held up pretty good for the large crop. I realize this was late afternoon light but the body and wing look a little bright to my eyes. Maybe a selective reduction of brightness or contrast?
Best wishes for the New Year
