I took this a month or so ago at Point Roberts.
Cropped a bit from sides and bottom.

Great capture Dave. Love the angle, makes me feel as though I am right there with the gul.
I was thinking that perhaps the crop might be a little tight, however on reflection I think it adds to the impact of the shot.
Rob is right...that is one in your face gull! Very nice angle and it has some real impact with the burst of red on the crab.
I think a bit more DOF here would have helped keep our eye on the bird. As I see the face I'm drawn in but then my eye moves back and I see the lack of detail towards the tail and that drops my interest a bit.
The BG's not perfect but it's not horrible, either. At least it's nicely blurred. You could try grabbing the darker color with the eye dropper tool, grabbing the soft brush and lightly (20-30% opacity) painting over the lighter spots in the BG to see if that would blend them in even more. Totally your call...
Too tight for me too. This Gull is soon jumping out of my monitor... :p And I don't mind the BG. It is what it is...

Like the background as is, shows place. Focus is where it needs to be, just would like a little more room.

Dave, I agree with the others here; really like the angle a lot. My initial reaction was that the crop was a bit tight, but with this image, I think it works. A bit more DOF would have been better, as Julie pointed out, but looking at your settings, I'm guessing the light was relatively low, so I'm not sure you could have gotten more than one stop more ( maybe f 5.6, bumping the ISO to 800; going to a SS of 1/60 with that 500 might have been more problematic unless your setup was very, very steady). Once you had that image wide open, though, you'd have had nothing to lose by stopping down and trying one or both of the above (subject activity permitting); might not have helped, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.:)
Good action shot. I'll cast another vote for a bit more room -- not a lot, but I think it could stand just a little breathing room without losing its impact. And some toning down of the light bg might help. I might also try to brighten and saturate the eye just a little bit.
Thanks everyone.
I did have another version with a bit more room on left and preferred this one. I am not a big fan of oof fore grounds either. This crop seemed more of a diagonal option.
The bird was moving around with the crab so only option for more dof was ISO800 and f5.6. This would have given a total gain in dof of about 3/8 inches which does not seem like much but I am not sure whether close to being in focus parts appear better if you know what i mean. So a definite option.
Happy New Years,
Dave
Hi Dave;
I love the action and not too bothered with the rest of it. Always a little nutty I would even like a tight crop of the Gull's head and the crab which is the story I grasped the moment I saw it.
Happy New Year

My wacky idea
Gus, if the FG had a bit more DOF to it I think this would be my favorite crop! With the crab so covered in sand I'm not sure if it's the strongest way to go but it's definitely an alternative to consider!
A good idea to have a look at Gus.
I had meant to go back to the original and others in the series to see if I could find something similar and just have not gotten around to it yet.I'll have a look with Jules's comment about fg in mind.
Dave
Another look at it. I took out some sand, toned down a few rocks and lightened the eye a bit.
Dave
Better yet!
I like it, Dave
Well done!
Gus
I like it, too...still wish we had a better view of that crab!
