I'm away for a few weeks so thought I'd post one last image as it's been awhile.
This is a 2yo lion photographed in the Laikipia area a couple of years ago. I have been making my own filters in photoshop rather than always use proprietary ones like Nik, so I won't go into the long details on the filters, suffice to say that it is de-saturated and 'aged'. No cloning or other PP.
    30D; 70-200 @ 200; Full Frame; Hand Held; ISO 400; f4; 1/350. Taken late in the afternoon.
Would preferred to have a bit more room below and to the lhs, but obviously that is in hindsight as I could have pulled back on the zoom.

creative work on the process here ! I would be tempted to shave a little more off the bottom to put more emphasis on the mane !

Thanks Andrew, I hadn't thought of that and it seems a logically good idea! :D

    Hiliary,

    Good self-critiquing on the composition.

I really love the old-time African safari photography look you managed here. You should consider posting a how-to article on it if so inclined.

The position of his head and look really saw majesty. Nice work.

Nicely composed (with good self critique) image of the young male. I like the look you have achieved with this. Nice and sharp as well.

Hilary - I like this a lot and agree with Andrew that a little off the bottom might improve it. Have a great trip. I'm looking forward to seeing tons of posts from you on your return.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Robert, I'll see if I can make a work flow tutorial when I get back … I'll try to remember to do it! :D
Rachel, trying to fit my camera gear into my bag, why does it always seem to multiply between trips???

Because we buy new equipment and then take the old as back-up or just in case :). At least cards take up much less room than loads and loads of rolls of film.

I was looking at this on your site earlier, beautiful image and really nice creative effect with your custom filter. I think "aged" is good term, I was trying to think of other words to decribe to myself, maybe like "ancient world". I was also wondering about the title "The Pretender". I was wondering does that have anything to do with the fact that the females usually do most of the work in the hunt and kill?

Brendan, I think you could be right and The Pretender is quite apt. Thanks for the other comments as well. Thanks Todd and Steve.

Am feeling pretty pleased with myself … I have room to spare in my camera bag and am only 3kg over the carry on limit!!!!! :p (I will carry my laptop under my jacket and they may never know). My check in luggage is lighter than my camera bag.

Good news from the Mara Ken. Looking forward to catching up with you (and those leopard cubs especially, I know I can't get better photos of those 6 cheetah cubs than you and Marc and Austin.) :)

Hi Hilary, I think you have achieved something very pleasing here with your processing. I love the detail on the face, adn the way that the hairs of his mane sweep downwards...
The aged feel to the image seems perfectly done
Good luck with your trip, i am sure you will be coming back with some nice ones.

    cheers

Thanks Grant. I'm looking forward to the challenge although the bar has been set pretty high recently so I am not expecting to reach those heights.

Thanks Christopher, nice to see you where the wild animals roam! :D
I'm trying to find a logical way to write a workflow but am finding it a challenge. A bit like writing a recipe for other cooks ... a pinch of this and pinch of that. But I have a long flight so hope to work on it. I'm not much of a teacher!

I know that feeling, Hilary. It took me quite a while and several failed attempts to write up the "old photo" workflow that I did in OOTB. Persevere and I'm sure you'll get it! :D

Thanks Peter, there's magic dust all around when amongst the wildlife of Africa so I just need a tiny bit to hit my cameras.

Thanks Christopher, I will do my best.
