    Default Long Island Blizzard

    Attached Images Attached Images

As the blizzard developed this afternoon I found my self in my rental car in my Mom's driveway attempting to photograph the Dark-eyed Juncos coming to seed.

Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens with a 25mm extension tube and the EOS-1D Mark IV. On a BLUBB filled with birdseed. ISO 800. Evaluative metering +2 1/3 stops: 1/160 sec. at f/5.6 set manually.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

I was looking at the same in my blizzard stricken yard when a Coopers Hawk grabbed one of my subjects. I like the detail you captured in the Junco. Also the flakes of snow on the bird tell the story nicely. I plan to shoot some of mine again Monday.

This is lovely; the clean white background of snow accentuates the soft colors in the feathers beautifully. The snow on the forehead is a delightful touch!
Do you bring a blizzard with you every time you come for a December visit? :D

Great work work in the ultra white surroundings!! As already said, the snow on the head makes a nice touch. Unsure on the slim crop, did the angle from tail to head dictate this format for you:confused::)

I really, really like this image and I've come back and looked at it a few time now! The only thing that I don't like is the one OOF falling snowflake in front of the wingcoverts/primaries. It obviously isn't a concern of yours but I thought I might mention it.
The eye is truly amazing and apart from the overall beauty of the image the eye just keeps sucking me in.

I agree; a bit more on the top would be better. Best to follow my own guidelines: 2X the room above than the room below :) In general.

Thank you sir. I did darken the pupil and lighten the iris a tad using two Quick Masks. Usually when I lighten the irises I reduce the noise only on that layer and did that here. The sort of black bar through the center of the eye does add a bit of interest; it is my rental Chevy Impala....

Why obvious? I do not like the falling snowflake in front of the wing coverts. I wanted to see who would mention it so kudos to you. If I had another sharp frame of the same bird in that pose I would not have hesitated to cover that with a Quick Mask.

I just re-checked the Deleted folder; no luck....

I thought if you didn't like it that you would have some tricks in your bag for removing such things. Wasn't sure whether you left it for effect. Crazy east coast weather and all.

I like the high key look, bird is nicely exposed, snow on head and flakes a bonus. I know I said weather looked good in the east the other day but wow..here in Ontario its been sunny, cold and windy. You guys are gettin hammered.

Thanks Paul, The wind is still howling here. Some drifts over three feet in the driveways. Yikes. It's me; this is three years in a row with a big blizzard.

Ditto the comments on the bird. Well done! Love the snowy cap on the head. Winds are howling pretty good here too, but please keep the snow over there I still have tons. :)

Very nice indeed! I talked to my brother who lives in the Bronx. He said it was quite the blizzard - stay safe !
I asked him about their bird, but most were staying hidden during the downfall.
I hope we can see more winter birds while you are there.

Thanks Nancy. My sister keeps a feeder or two stocked outside the kitchen window and when I saw all the juncos I simply moved the feeder and set up in the car....

Sounds like a great Blind.:) My sister in law feeds them as well. I think they will all be grateful for the seed this week.
