A simple, straight forward flight shot.

    200-400+1.4 TC = 420mm on D700 hand-held. ISO 3200 F6.3 1/1000s. Manual exposure mode. All natural light. Slightly cloudy.

No crop. Enhanced the wing details with Tonal Contrast in Color Efex Pro.

Not the best wing position. But, it wasn't my call :o

Comments welcome and appreciated. Thank you for looking !

Nice capture, I really like the High Key on this.

Wing position looks pretty darn good to me Desmond. As well the head is nicely backstopped by the far wing.

I like the bit of toning in the corners.

    Good for you.

I like the hi-key, and the wing framing the head, as well as the good detail in blacks and whites. My only reservations are 1) I would have preferred to see it posted at the full 1024 width; and 2) for my personal preference the vignetting in the corners is a bit too obvious; for a hi-key shot I might have preferred a simple 1px border around the image. Those are nitpicks unrelated to shot itself, which is very nice indeed.

The head stands out nicely against the far wing. Sharpness is very good, as is your exposure. I like the head turn towards you. I might darken the pupil a little (can't tell if the nictitating membrane is covering the eye or not). I'm not a big fan of the darkened image corners.

I agree with Doug. High key is OK as is the sharpness. To be able to see the pupil would make this even better.

Interesting that some of you mentioned vignetting. Fact is, I didn't do it :):p I did notice it myself after I posted it. But of course it's an easy fix.

Yes, it's the nictitating membrane, Doug. Good suggestion on darkening the eye. Probably increasing the contrast a tad.

Thank you for the comments everyone !

Beautiful image, Desmond! That wing really helped separate the head from the BG. I wonder if you tried adding anything like a blue gradient or a rendered/clouds type filter so the BG went to blue and the tail showed up as well as the head? Just a thought...

I do very much like it as presented. The span of that front and back wing as well as the excellent HA makes this a winner in my book.

Wonderful image. Not sure how "simple" can be applied to a Bald Eagle. The composition is great, leaving the room for it to fly into. I also like how the back wing helps the head pop a little. I would personally go without the vignette but it isn't my photograph!!
