    Default Double-barred Finch

    DBFINCH4 by tphrambaut, on Flickr

    Hi Folks,

    First post in this forum.

    7d, 500mm f4, 5.0 @ 1/1250, 400ISO.

This is about version four. I have tried all manner of sharpening and different things. I would have loved the background colour behind the bird to be as is in the bottom left hand corner.

I took this from the car - a group of these guys were bathing in a puddle of water on the road. When I stopped and pulled over they fled to the fence. I thought of a good bumber sticker for the car "I'm not drunk, nor a bad driver - just a bird photographer"

    Thanks all Tom

Very cute little guy Tom. Nice first post. I like the BG, pose and the way you have framed the image. I find the color of the fence wire to be a bit overpowering.

Poor little guy looks to be in a miserable mood! The BG is quite beautiful and I would not wish for anything different about it. The rest of the image seems strong on the contrast, particulalry the blacks. I would also warm up the WB and lighten the shaded part of the belly (watch out for noise creeping up though!)

Good pose by this strikingly plumaged bird. Perch could be better but if it is going to be barbed wire I prefer older rusty ones like this.

Oh, and welcome to the "Avian" forum :).

    Tom "

    Welcome to Avian!

Good advice above. I would consider desatting the red channel, which will really tone down the barbed wire without significantly altering the rest of the colors in the image. Worth a try.

    Cheers

Big welcome to Avian, Tom. I love your Auzzie birds. Nice pose and soft light. Maybe a little oversharpened as presented and colours do look a little ovn the saturated side. The green look to the belly has me confused - is it stained or light reflected up off green grass? BG is great and barbed wire typical and nicer rusted than fresh galvanised :)

    thanks all for the comments.

My monitor is tonned down - it is most likley that the image looks abit over cooked on other monitors. I agree Tony that it is a bit over sharpened. Still learning CS5!. As for the green tinge - well I do not know, certainly not there natural color. I would say it is some reflection of green from the grass? Could be stain - these guys were bathing in shallow pools of water and they all seemed to have this unusual color to there underside.

I'm happy with the head angle and I do like the soft light. I realy like greyish backgrounds in a photo.
