This is another image from this Saturday (afternoon) out at Ft. Desoto. I was able to get my lens about an inch or two off the surface of the water to make this image.

    Shooting Solution
    Camera: Nikon D200
    Lens: Sigma 500 f/4.5
    Manual exposure, 1/1250 @ f/8, ISO 400
Manual focus, 95% of full frame
Mongoose M2.3 head on Gitzo 1410 legs, all the way down

    Thanks for looking!

Comments welcomed and much appreciated :)

Nice image Blake. Love the low angle, some may not like the oof little wave in foreground but doesn't really bother me. Background compliments bird nicely, exposure handled well.
p.s. How do you like the sigma 500, I have been thinking about that lens for a while.

I love the bird, especially the rich color, the angle and the wave action. The one line of OOF green in the center is a bit distracting.

Thanks, Todd. While the Sigma was Auto Focusing, it was a dream come true. It's still a dream come true, it's just a little more work ;) The HSM AF is fast and responsive (I miss it very much :()The glass is just as sharp as any prime lens in production (in my humble opinion). I have in-camera sharpening turned off and I'm amazed by the sharpness of the raw images. It's light weight and can be hand held for long periods of time. For the price, it's hard to find a better value.

Wow, good thing you didnt go any lower:eek: This is a wonderful image Blake. The angle, the details and the bg are all sweet. If I could nit one thing it might be to have just a touch less oof water in the fg, but that is getting real picky, great shot:)

Great composition and pleasing BG. Very nice detail. The FG doesn't bother me too much.

liked everything about this image blake.
have recently acquired a used sigma 500mm f4.5 EX non-DG version. the weather is not so conducive to photography in my part of world. will surely seek ur suggestions on making best use of the gear as i start using it more often.

Another great image Blake, though I do find the foreground 'wave' a little to dominant - but only just. A top photo for showing just how flexible the beaks of these birds are.

Wow, this is stunning. The hint of habitat is just perfect and nicely puts the finishing touch to this image.

Very well done Blake. I love it. Composition and background are dead on. Also like that little wave; gives it character.

    Big Congrats...:D
