However, after few shots with the TC 2.0 III + 400/2.8 VR the camera would freeze and show an error message in the display. The image would be exposed and recorded correctly. After few tries the camera would shoot another frame just to freeze up again. This happens only with the 400mm + TC 2.0 combo. The camera would work correctly with other lenses/ TCs combination. However, the same TC + lens combination would work without problem on my D300. Any suggestion of where the problem might be? I am inclined to think that the problem could be with the camera body but then I don't understand why it is not showing up with other lenses/TCs combinations.

I had an almost similar situation.........but using the TC 1.4. It turned out to be a slit in the rubber gasket of the TC, which in some way messed up the contacts between the lens, TC and camera. You might want to thoroughly check out the TC 2.0, assuming you are not having problems with the the 400mm directly connected to the DS3. Occasionally , the rubber gasket on the TC can also get pinched while mounting it to the camera..........hope that helps..............Also, if you are not having the same problems with other TC's mounting to the DS3, I would strongly suspect the 2.0.

The D3 series is very sensitive to any resistance induced by contamination or oxidation of the contacts on lens or camera. The Dxxx series is not as sensitive to this. An easy fix is to clean all of the contacts. Clean camera, lens and converter contacts first with a pencil eraser (making sure you hold the camera upside down when cleaning those contacts so that no eraser stubble gets in the camera). Next clean them again with some Isopropyl Alcohol - preferably the 91-100% pure kind. You can generally get 91% in any drug store. Don't use lower grade stuff because it generally has a lot of metallic contaminants in it. This will almost certainly resolve the problem.
