I was shooting a cooperative GBH at my local lake evening before last, when I looked up and saw this guy watching the action from above. I often see these guys in flight but almost never perched. This is a very steep capture angle, and heavy crop; but my best image yet of a Sharpie so I figured I'd post it. If anyone believes this is a Coopers please let me know (and why); I've based my ID on Sibley (heavy streaked breast and head shape) and think it's right.

Nice shot of what appears to be a Merlin. A less steep shooting angle would have been nice but sometimes you just have to work with what you're given.

Thank you Charles. I do believe you're right; I didn't even think of Merlin, and was unfortunately looking away when he flew so I didn't see back side or wing shape. The dark eye bothered me with my ID. Merlin looks spot-on.

    Bill,

It's a nice sharp image, and I think you could not have done better with this flighty bird.

    All the best,

    Michael

    Bill"

Well exposed and sharp, self critique about the angle is really the main issue here. (OK, maybe a bit more head turn, but that would have looked better with lower angle too!)

    Cheers

Bill, the comp suits the pose, and I agree with your self critique that the angle is a bit steep. I like the colours.

Nice image from a tough situation. I agree on the HA and steep angle. Nice comp and light!

Another vote for Merlin. I agree with your self-critique.
