Default Suggestion for Camera for Macro and Wide Angle Lens

I have the Canon 1DMkIV and a 24-105mmL lens. I'm looking to buy another camera and a wide angle lens.

    1) I'd like a 2nd body to use for macro, walking around, maybe landscapes, etc. I had the original 5D and really liked it....except for the slow shutter lag. I never used the 5D for macro but was wondering if the Canon 5DII would be any good for that as well as other uses listed.

    2) I'm looking for a wide angle zoom lens. It looks like my choices are 17-40mm and 16-35mm. I had a 16-35mmL I and was not that impressed. I'm not crazy about spending a lot of money if the II version isn't any better. I've read good and bad on the 17-40mm. These are my canon choices. In addition to these....and other brand like Tamron or Sigma that may be worth the money?

    Lana:

Ah, just go for the best, D3x with 14-24 for the wide angle. :p

    Couldn't resist.

I am sure the Canon folks will give you some good advice. The 14-24 is such a spectacular lens in the Nikon system that it is hard to ignore.

    Good luck!

    Cheers

About 2 years ago I was ever so close to pulling the plug on Canon and switching to Nikon. I pared down my equipment to just one camera and my 500mmL. If Nikon hadn't been (and still is) so difficult getting a 500mm I wouldn't be having this conversation right now. Your combination is exactly what I'd go for. Thanks for your thoughts....they are what dreams are made of!

Lana, a landscape photographer I have tremendous for and who uses two 5D2s with the 16-35 is Kah Kit Yoong. http://www.magichourtravelscapes.com/index.php

I am doing a three week NZ South Island workshop with him in April.

The 5D2 is an excellent camera; Kah Kit tells me that he will replace one 5D2 only when the new 1Ds4 or 5 comes out next year. He sold his 1Ds3 when the selling was right.

In the meantime one look at his images says the 5D2 as a landscape body rocks!!

The 5D2 has no "slow shutter lag" that I've experienced. I would think that lots of people would be talking about that type of flaw, if were actually the case. Maybe you meant to say something else.

My bird body is the 7D and I use the 5D2 as my everything-else body. The 5D2 has stunning high-ISO performance. I love it for scenic and walk-around travel photography, with either the 24-105mm or my 70-200mm f/4L IS.

Jay......I've pretty well decided to pull the plug on the 5D2 tomorrow. With what little landscape I've done...I really suck....but I'm going to start taking it more serious. Right now I was more interested in the macro ability.

Dave.....in comparing the original 5D to the MkIV....there was shutter lag when I would photograph birds. That was the only time that I would notice it. For everything else....I loved the camera. I just never tried it for macro. I know I'll like it for everything else.

I think my biggest concern has been what lens to get.....and I'm working on that one.

Thanks for your help guys......I think I'm a little richer in knowledge.....and poorer in the wallet!!

The time between the first and the second shot is longer with my 5D2 vs. my 7D, but the first shot comes off just as quickly with the 5D2. I'm experiencing absolutely no delay in the first shot when shooting birds.

The shutter lag on the 5D was 75ms, on the 5DMkII 73ms. The shutter lag on the MkIV is between 40-55ms. It may not seem like much of a difference....but when you're trying to get just the right head turn from an itchy, twitchy warbler it can make a difference.....and that's where I noticed it. I loved the 5D and will probably order a 5DMkII tomorrow. I'll even use if for some bird images....but I don't think I'll try it during warbler season. Thanks for taking your time to help.

Lana, you're really fast. Detecting 20ms without instruments puts your right up there with the Princess and the Pea for sensitivity. :)

You will love the 5D2 - seriously suggest you get the 16-35!

Hi Lana. I'm late to the discussion here, but I just wanted to reiterate what David and Jay said-you will love the 5D MKII! The high ISO performance and image quality is outstanding. You will really appreciate this for hand-held photography. You might want to stick with the Canon L lenses with a full-frame sensor-something to think about. Hope you are having a good school year! :)
