    Hi Guys,

As winter really kicks in over here i am working on one of my favorite winter species again being the Great Bittern. Here's one from a recent series and hop to get some more shot of this beautiful bird this season.

    greetings,

    Jeroen Stel

Hi Jeroen, the textures and colours look good against the snow, and the small bit of colour in the birds eye, as well as it's raised foot really make this shot work nicely for me. I would like to see it with the bittern getting a little more contrast and punch, just my thoughts.
Well done on photographing what is in southern Africa an extremely elusive species..I have yet to see one!
    cheers

    Hi Grant,

Thanks for your comment. The Great Bittern is a very elusive species down here also. The current weather conditions with snow and ice make it come out of it's habitat to fourage for food along the edges of the reed bed.

    greetings,

    Jeroen Stel

Superb atmosphere, pose and exposure. That combined with the rarity makes this an awesome image.

Love the contrast between the subject and the snow.

Pose is excellent and that eye is perfect.

If that one big snowflake hadn't been there in the back, this might have been even better than it already is.

Jeroen - I love the pose (the raised foot is great), but what makes this for me is the setting - I've just really never seen marsh birds in the snow.

This is stunning! The feeling of the image makes me put on a down jacket :-). Love the raised foot and the pose. Goed gedaan, Jeroen.
