Default Ring Necked Duck at Papago Pond

This was my best from Artie's In The Field Workshop at Papago Ponds outside Phoenix Zoo. I learned quite a bit in 1 day and I hope this photo reflects well on the workshop.

Canon 20D, 300/2.8 and 2x TC at 600mm, 1/1600, f/5.6, ISO 800. I forgot to reduce ISO as the sun came out. Probably could have gone to ISO 200 at 1/400 and still maintained sharp wingtips. The shadow on the breast bothers me but not much else. Thanks for looking.

You've done a fine job with the "leader of the band"!!! You have to take them where you get them....especially in a wing flap. This one is even showing off the ring on his neck for you. It looks like there's some noise in the BG that would be easy to remove.....probably from the ISO 800. Well done!!

Nice capture, Lee. Love the pose and action. Agree with the noise in BG.

    Thanks Lana & Lori,
I reworked it using a touch more Neat Image and sharpened a tad more after resizing. I think most of the BG noise is compression artifacts because it's not nearly as noticeable in the original.

I was trying to get more color in the water like Artie had in his newsletter images from Papago Ponds but can't seem to get it right. Appreciate your comments.

The BG looks much better with the noise removed. I'll have to play around with the color.....did you convert the image to sRGB for the web? That can affect it some. I'll look at it when I get home from school as I'm a tad busy now......I leave Wed afternoon for spring break and I have to get my NCAA brackets done......I have priorities!!!

    Hi Lana,
Yes, this has been converted to sRGB. I'm trying to get that shimmery look that Artie had on his images from Papago Ponds.

    Thanks Harold.

I saw Artie's newsletter but don't have the copy anymore to compare the images.....but I think I know what you're talking about. I suppose it could be something in the use of different RAW converters but it may also have something to do with the difference in appearance of an 20D vs. 1DMkIII image. Some have told me that the image of the MkIII is like no other......at least when it's in focus.

Thanks Dean. I just posted another from the same workshop where I think the water looks much better because I had dialed back to ISO 200.
