    Default Merlin with Dowitcher

Lucked upon thia Merlin at the beach one day just after he had attacked and killed this Dowitcher. Got to watch him carve and eat the whole bird. :)

I haven't posted a lot here at BPN, but wonder why there is no thumbnail created for this post ??

    Tim:

    Striking image,perfect shooting angle, BG.

Did he catch the dowitcher in the air, or on the beach?

    Cheers

Wow. Wow. Wow! That foot on the shorebird is killer, plus the perfect angle to the Merlin and a perfect head angle. (No clue on the thumbnail.... I will try to get help.)

    Thanks Randy

Unfortunately, we came upon the bird just after he had made the kill, so I have no idea if it was in the air or on the beach. There was a small flock of Dowitchers nearby on the beach.

WOW! Is that the top of the dowitcher's skull to the left? Brains are obviously a favourite of the merlin. I think catching the birds on the top of a little hill/mound works wonders. I like how the foreground on the right just drops away.....
This would be right up there on the raptor encounter wish list.

Good low perspective Tim, and I like the light and sharpness. Killer BG too.

Just phenomenal. I can't think of any way it could have been improved in the field or on the computer.

Tim, would love to see more of your images here at BPN. This is awesome. Low angle, perfect bird angle, sharpness... and the carcass adds so much here.

Fantastic image Tim. great detail and feather pattern on both birds and excellent low angle eye contact. Light and exposure is perfect.
