I was following a red shouldered hawk from one tree to the next, trying desperately to catch him in flight. In the process I startled the armadillo, or he startled me and stood up. It was a split second shot having time just to bring down the shiutter speed and he ran into the bushes.

Just seeing one for mine would be a joy to witness Jay.
A little too cramped all round for mine, cutting off the legs is a little unfortunate, plus could do with a round of USM and contrast to boost this fine sighting.

I went back and redid the image from RAW. I did contrast and un mask while putting back the BG that I cut out. do you think this is better? Jay

Amazing creature and fantastic sighting. When you 'put back' background, did you do this with the cloning tool? I ask because it looks like there is a lot of artifact which does detract. It would be much better with the armadillo to the left of the frame giving it room to look into. The OP is too tight (as Marc said) but perhaps you can work with the in camera crop again to give a better final image, even trying a vertical keeping all the room on the rhs, leaving space for virtual feet along with head room.
Not an animal we see here often and very interesting.

Something you do not see very often, and in my case never.

Repost has for me at least much too much contrast. A vertical crop may work here but I think the lighter area on the snout will take some careful work.

I have given it a go but am sure you will be able to do far more from the RAW.

Jay - great story and good advice above. The repost is better and so is Ken's but I think I prefer horizontal with some from the lhs cropped and the room to look into on the rhs as Hilary says.
