Default Hello from a not-so-sunny Derbyshire

My name is Richard Pittam, an amatuer wildlife photographer from England, with a small website at www.wildapertureimages.co.uk . I have been viewing all the brilliant images on BP.net for some time now and am constantly blown away by the high quality of the images posted. I have decided to take the plunge and post some of my own......soon - please don't be too harsh. Having recently acquired a mint Canon 600mm f4 IS, traded-in against my beloved 300 f2.8 IS, I am trying to further improve my bird flight photography techniques, by now being to take images @ 600mm without the need for a 2x converter.

    Cheers.
    Richard

Richard, welcome to BPN! We're so glad you have decided to come out of hiding to start posting! If you are intimidated by the Avian forum, start out in the Eager to Learn forum - we try to be more "teachable" there. :)

Looking forward to seeing some of your images and big congrats on getting that big 600mm lens!

Welcome. We try for honest but gentle.... Don't be throwing away your 2X just because you got yourself a 600. With practice you should be able to make sharp images at 1200mm down to 1/60 sec...

    Hi Arthur.

My problem with BIF and the 300 2.8 + 2x was not only the 2-stop loss of light, but also the degradation of autofocus performance, even on my mk3. It was possible to "freeze" fast flying birds, but clearly not as quick as if I'd just got the 1.4x on, but then I'd only have 420mm, hence my jumping up a few millimeteres. I would have gotten the 500mm but the 600 was offered as a mint at the right price, so I thought....out you come wallet.........we'll see how it goes.
Thanks for you reply - you continue to inspire.
    Cheers.
