    Default Improvement #7 Pine Warbler

Around home, the only time I see one of these birds is up high, I've never seen one come to suet....so at Weymouth, I was floored when this Warbler and many of his kind came down and waited in line for the suet. This image was at point blank range.
When we arrived, there was only about 1 hour of good light left, lots of shadows and clouds.
Couldn't really move left or right, to many people, I would have avoided the background...

ps..I know tree looks blue, tried to adjust it, maybe its a Colorado Blue Spruce???? :)

Hi Paul, Nice HA and I like the perch I would tone down the bright spot in the URC.

Hi Paul. What a sweet image of a beautiful little warbler, with great HA and detail. The tree and blue cast are unfortunate. Were it mine I think I would consider it worth a try to clone out the tree (admittedly a delicate masking job), and to set a white point on the white portions of the wing coverts, or desaturate the blue channel until those areas looked whiter. With a little time investment this could be a beauty. Perhaps some of the experts will have a suggestion or two.

Whoa, the warbler looks great! Good details, and I like the low light ambiance. Too bad about the large tree behind the subject though. I would also add a bit of canvas back (if you have it) to avoid the lower part of the perch and toe from being so close to the edge. For the blue tree, the easiest and fastest way is to desaturate the blue channel completely, and the cyan about half - this also took care of the bluish cast on the wing and tail.

Only time I had a Pine Warbler come down was while I was trying to call in a Dark-eyed Junco (very similar songs).

Dan, wow, my hats off...goes to show what I know about adjusting colors, maybe its "like what my Wife always says" are you color blind. :) or was it deaf. Hmmm not sure anymore.
An good job on the blue...I honestly tried to get rid of it but nothing looked right....

Bill and Don I will work on this some more you've both given me some good ideas and isn't this what we're all here for...

Funny, that's where I photographed my winter Pine Warbler. Was this on a farm set up for bird photography? For the life of me--ah, it just came: Gary Carter's place.... ?????

Artie, this is a place called "Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve", in Southern Pines, NC. They have a few feeders behind the visitors centre, bird after bird coming in...lots of people too...we were there on the weekend. Next time I go it'll be weekday.

I'll probably go back on my way down in February...Never did get the Sharp-tailed Sparrows I was after in SC, I just got unlucky with the cold snap and high winds.

Bill Here's my best try at removing the tree, and used a gradient of both colors for background.
I will rework the area near the bottom left of the bird..it still looks cut...

Thanks for the info Paul. Great job of tree surgery. How in the world did you handle the edges???

The repost looks a lot darker than the orig.

A single click on the white/black on the wing using either the White Balance Tool in Bridge or the Curves White/Gray/Black dropper in PS will make the tree look gray and the bird brighter yellow amd the BG warmer.

Nice capture of a beautiful bird. Almost any color balance setting for this capture will produce a nice image.

    Thanks Everyone

Artie for the edges I use a combination of Refine edge (thanks again) and cloning...
I use the refined to make sure I have all the bird (and about 2 pixels more, use select - modify - expand) and whatever I want to keep..
Inverse mask remove the background, chose my color (or colors) for background and I like to the gradient tool to add in color
Inverse again and go around the bird and perch with clone tool (5 pixils or less size, keep it small, sometimes I use 1 pixil), adding background or bird where its needed..
Takes a while and doesn't work everywhere but I like the results
