    Default Longwood Gardens Holiday Ornament

    Attached Images Attached Images

The images in the ornament were all taken at Longwood Gardens from the workshop on Sunday that I did with Roman.
I used Patti Eden"s link :) to Gavin"s tutorial which was very easy to follow and I can't wait to create another. I dd have one little glitch. The right side has a flat spot and I might refine the edges when I make my next one-still a fun thing to try. Check out my blog to see the images I used for this ornament.

    Denise,

Greetings. Wow, that's great. The colors and bg work well. Only the ornament is reflecting off of some unseeable surface... some bg change to show the surface would be good.

    Cheers,

I was hoping that the BG all looked like an icy surface.

Denise, Beautiful! The photos you chose make for a very festive globe.

Very cool work here. Maybe you could make a real Christmas ball with those images...Maybe we can get them printed on metal then have someone reshape it into a ball...

    Hey Denise,
Looks like you did pretty well with those zoom-twist blurs!!! Very cool the way you combined them too!!! Why did you have to give me something else to try???......I have to get the book finished.....so must resist! That BG is sweeeeet!!! I'm wondering if Michael is thinking gradient??? Might give it a more 3D look but I like it as presented! Looking forward to the other ones!

Wow! Neat result, denise. Sphere, highlights and color combos are great. I could get lost in those pics. :)

Okay... I guess I'm used to surfaces creating horizons. Here is a simple idea (here just a masked darkening curves layer):

Inverting and flipping the bg at the horizon would add to the effect shown here. In general, the intent is to add to the three dimensional appearance. Separating the reflection from the non-reflected globe would give the appearance of the globe floating above the surface.

Just some ideas, the OP is great...

    Cheers,

    -Yamo-

I think it is suppose to look like an ornament hanging in mid-air-hence the string. This makes it look as if it is sitting on a surface. I'm not crazy about that look but to each there own. Thank you for taking the time to re post it and offer your thoughts.:)

    Denise,

Okay... not sitting on a surface puts the reflection away from the globe (even without a horizon). So as to not make a mash of the bg... the following mock up is what I mean:

I still like my OP better. But that is just my opinion. You are certainly entitled to yours. Maybe you'd like to do one of your own. The link for the tutorial is in Patti's post or you could create your own workflow. Looking forward to your version....:)

Works for me... (My day job is involved with synthetic 3D images & models. Just sharing some of the typical visual touches that are used in my field. Wasn't trying to "better" your image, just showing a different approach from a 3D modeling perspective.)

Denise, I like it! It reminds me of the cover of the blur guide in miniature:)

Michael, I hope you don't misunderstand. I appreciate your input. I was just saying what I preffered not which was better or worse just what appealed to me visually. That is all. I do appreciate your input-really.:)

Cheryl, Now that you mention it it does! Thanks

Making these is a lot of fun and it's surprisingly easy. The patchwork looks great but when playing around with this, I'm finding I prefer using a single winter or Christmas related image. :)

The tutorial is for a photo ball, not specifically for a Christmas ornament. The reflection probably isn't necessary if you're trying to give the impression of a hanging ornament.

I'm late to the party...but it was fun to follow the thread...............I way like the the original post. When looking at you most recent post (which I also love), I can imagine this with an even longer ribbon giving a more weightless appearance. But, I love it wither way....................I do notice the spherical accuracy of the quilt, terrific....! I'll have to try this
