I removed a drop of rain from the grass stem just above the right foot. Selective sharpening, miniscule adjustment of midtones(lighten)

    Chris:

He looks a bit unhappy, from the rain I suspect.
Sharp, well exposed, classic wren pose. Nicely scaled perch. Just enough variation in the background to make it look natural.

I don't know how large and distracting the removed drop was, but it might add to your story (bird in rain) if you left it? Perhaps toned down a bit, but still present. I don't have anything against removing certain things, just wonder if it might help with the picture storyline.

    Cheers

    Randy

I love the image design with its perfect composition and loverly BKGR. The angle of the bird to the sensor is perfect too. It is rare that I wish for a bit more d-o-f with images of small birds in low light but here I would have loved to have seen the tail sharp.....

Thank you both for the positive words.

Randy, I personally thought the single drop seemed a little awkward where it was. Here is a version with it.

Arthur, Your comment on the shallow DOF(OOF tails) is a recurring issue I have with these little guys. I will endeavor to get thes entirety little beauties in focus. I will not post another FW until I have one with sufficient DOF:D

I'm fine with or without the drop of water. It's funny, with most poses I am fine with f/4 and the eye being in focus, but here, with tail raised and so prominent, it bugs me.

Don't refrain from working at wide apertures with small songbirds :) I have been doing it for 28 years (though I will stop down on them when I have the light to do so....)

Nice. Clean shot with no distractions in the background. Well scaled, green perch (instead of the usual stick), and nice details in the birds feathers. Sure, it would be nice to have more DOF for the tail, but good luck ever being able to achieve that:D

I think the drop could add to the image. As for the DOF, the bird's main body is incredibly sharp and well exposed. But somehow the OOF tail appears to be almost cut off from the bird. Almost as a branch or similar... But please believe me that I recognize the challenge of this posea and capture. JR

Fantastic BG, pose, details and perch. The oof tail didn't bother me at first but after all the discussion, maybe a little. I think because it is tanding up a a prevalent portion of the BG. But I still wish the image was mine!

Hi Chris , a beautiful image of this little Wren with great eye contact - seems to be sizing you up. Also prefer it without the raindrop and like the discussion re DOF which is allways a challenge in the field.

Cheers, Peter. Don't believe everything you hear :p

Pieter, I spent three consecutive days with this family of FWs. This was taken on day three and I think at this stage she was probably wondering why the **** this big monster with the giant eye was following them around :D Thanks for you thoughts on the raindrop.
