I rarely get to post in Avian because I'm still only dreaming about a 500 with a TC (among other equipment on my list :) ). For now I'm stuck with my 300, which by the way, I really like. I just always find myself missing opportunities. Then again, I'm sure a bigger lens is not a cure for wanting more reach...you can always want more.

Anyway, found a great location in South Carolina over the Thanksgiving holiday. Birds everywhere. I got a few shots I like including this one of a very cooperative snowy. I like the environmental feel of this one. This is about a 40% crop with some minor sharpening and color adjustment.

    Mike:

    Great display of the feet!
The light was well off to your left, but soft, and I am OK with the soft shadows it created.

Nice and sharp on the eye.

    Some noise in the background.

We always want more reach, although it comes with lots of compromises, cost, weight, lack of flexibility, etc. Plus minor issues like more critical technique, etc. :)

    Cheers

    Randy

I too am OK with the soft back/sidelight. And the good exposure. The face could go a bit lighter.

One man's environmental feel is another's pile of distracting sticks....

    Hi Mike,
I really like the way the Egret looks aginst that Green BG. I do not mind the branches but If it were my image I would clone out some of them. I took a quick stab at it, let me know what you think.

Not a bad job on what you did Peter (thanks for your efforts BTW); there are some telltale smudges though--hard to avoid with the JPEGs.

The biggest problem branch however is still the one in the foreground as it is the most o-o-f and therefore the most distracting. O-O-F stuff between the viewer and the subject is lethal nearly 100% of the time :)

Nice work Peter. I actually had to go back and look at the original to see which ones you removed. It was then that I noticed the subtle smudges...
