Default Preditor and Prey - Juvi Bateleur

Another image from my recent sighting of this Juvi Bateleur Eagle having a meal of a rabbit. Taken early morning in overcast conditions in the Kruger National Park. I was fortunate that I was the only car around, so I had front row seats.

"Game over." That's the message that I take away from this shot. I'm enjoying your good exposure and correct composition. As you like to say, "An opportunity well-used."

Sharpness is excellent and I like the composition too. Nice head angle. I only wish the line of the road wasn't running through the eagle's head.

This is awesome Stuart, love the stare your getting. For me it would have been nice if you trained him to land on the side instead of on the road :) but still a very nice photo

Impressive bird, well photographed, Stuart. Story well told. Was the rabbit road kill or did the eagle take him out?

Thank you all for the feedback and comments.

Ann. Apparently, they do go for the eyes first.

Grace. Im not actually sure if it was roadkill, or the bateleur that killed it. Judging by the state of the body, it is still fairly intact apart from where the bateleur has eaten. there again, if the bateleur killed it, Im amazed it left it on the road, and didnt take it into the bush, or at least to the side of the road.

Of course a fantastic occasion greatly documented. Low angle, head angle and exposure are just great. Very impressive head. Though I agree with Doug's comment re the edge of the road preferably not intersecting with the head. And it appears as if the eagle was sharpened. As the rabbit is largely in the same plane of DOF it might have been a good idea to include it in the sharpening as well...

Thanks a stack for your feedback Joerg. The bateleur and the rabbit were selected together for sharpening. As the rabbit has softer fur, it may appear soft ( not sharpened )

Hi Stuart, I liked your previous image of this scene and like this one just as much. The eye contact, clarity and colours on the eagles face are awesome and show up the distinctive green of the immature Bateleur. I agree with you re the sharpening of the fur. Excellent image.

Beautiful, I love the eye contact and the way the talons are into the prey.
