    Default Wading Bear

Another one taken at the lower platform at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, Alaska. This adolescent's fur is changing color.

    Canon 50D
    100-400 @ 400mm
    1/160
    f6.3
    ISO 800
Tripod on the platform, cropped a little from rhs and top. Selectively lightened eye, increased contrast and USM applied to bear.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Interesting to see the change in fur color. Did you tone down blown highlights along the back and top of head, as these areas appear to have no detail. Nice pose and looks sharp. Comp wise I think it would benefit from a crop top and right as the bear is looking back through the frame.

Like the pose of the bear and his position in the water and grasses. I could also see Todd's suggestion of cropping as another option. I think I'm seeing a touch of magenta cast to this, specifically the water and nose of the bear. Sharpness looks good to me.

Thanks guys for the comments. Todd, yes unfortunately a few highlights along the back that I wasn't able to recover. Steve - I see what you're talking about on the water (not the nose) but I'm not sure if it is a cast or just a shadow. I've got a print of this and there's no cast so I'm confused about it.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Since I've never calibrated my monitor, I'm hesitant to make comments about color casts unless they stand out to me. The cast in the nose is very slight, the water a little more noticeable. If no one else mentions it, its probably just me!

Hi Rachel, I think most comments have picked up on the main points, however he/she does look like one of those very well loved bears, most of us have had, judging on the fur & colouration. :D

Love the look back pose here Rachel, and agree with a crop to the right and more on the left if you have it.

Certainly appears to have a magenta cast Steve (on my cal monitor) evident in the water and slightly on the nose.

Repost here (if that's OK Rachel?) with it taken out, also tidied up the blown highlights via some cloning plus a luminosity mask and slight sharpening & saturation.

Marc - I don't mind at all but the colors of the repost look off to me, too much orange. The bear's fur has some red in it so maybe by removing the magenta cast, it turned too orange? I'm on a calibrated monitor too and see the cast in the water (but as I said it is not in a print I had made) but not on the nose. Also I don't have any more on the left. Thanks for the repost. It's all a good learning experience for me.

Hi Rachel, hope you dont mind, but here is my suggestion on the magenta cast. Selected the water, and desaturated the magenta in saturation. Then in colour balance added a touch of green. Reselected the other part of the image, and desaturated the magenta slightly on the bear. I then selected the nose and desaturated the blues, as it was showing a blue cast. Added back a bit of black.

Stuart - always welcome the tweaking and repost. Thanks very much, looks like this did the trick. I'll play with the original and see if I can duplicate what you did.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel
