    Default Backlight Grizzly bear

Taken towards the later part of the day, but pushed a bit in the exposure/comp setting. As Todd knows, it's a bit hit & miss and no real guidelines, unless anyone cares to chip in here, please do. Yes, there will be odd hot spots, however it's the overall look & feel as the bear was crossing over a small inlet I wanted, and you can see all the bugs around him/her too.

Love it Steve! Have been waiting for you to post this. Plenty of detail, you did well. I for one will be making more images like this as they are presented to me in the field.

this is exquisite stuff Steve...love the rim-light and the bugs, and the surrounds have just enough detail to anchor the image nicely...

Very well captured Steve. I really like the light on the bear's left ear & the golden glow of the rim lighting.

I like this immensely and would also like to know some really good guidelines for getting rim lighting effectively without too much trial and error in the field … I'm always frightened that the light will go before my trial goes from error to success!

I do find that it feels a bit tight at the top, but a minor criticism. Very strong image and I just love the flies.

Outstanding image. That light on the bear's left ear really rocks.

The hot spots distracted me for about 15 seconds and then I looked at the picture and wow, congratulations. With 3/4 of it you could hardly have done better with studio lights. The left ear does rock as do a lot of other details, including the colour in the water. A target to aim for.

I have some witty advice for guideline ... try the settings 1/800sec ISO400 -2EV as a starting point.
(I know... it's not really going to help.)

Steve - this is beautiful. I prefer your OP (sorry Peter) with the rocks and the slight reflection in the water. Congrats!

Rim light always produces the goods Steve, and I like the outline of the bear in this. The highlighted bugs puts this over the top.

Excellent Steve. I think what makes this one work so well for me is that almost the entire outline of the bear is hit with some level of light. The little bit hitting the top of the left ear helps define the shape of the head. I also prefer the OP because the light on the rocks gives it a very strong feeling of the long shadows that come at the end of the day. Also digging the illuminated flies.

Hi Steve, nicely done, good to see you getting the exposure for backlit in camera, the only nit i i would have is that it a bit tight for me, but i'm geussing there's good reason.

    Cheers

Thanks everyone for the comments & feedback.

Yes Hilary/Ken a little tight, but that is only down to using the 300 which is a fixed lensand was the closest to hand. The 500 was would have been fine for close-ups :D, but had no idea that he/she was going to walk, then cross so close by, otherwise the 70-200f/2.8 would have been better, even with a 1.4x, still giving the flexibility.

    Thanks again.

Wow Steve, another great bear shot...this is superb for me. Really loved the OP, and the backlit flies, and hint of habitat with the rocks and river are great...well done

Super interesting image, I'm as drawn in my the flies and the beach as the bear. So many great elements. The only area that distracts me just a bit is the brightest spot right behind the bear's hump. An easy ps fix if you care to address it.

    Superb image Steve,

    Very well seen and executed.

I hope this is nowhere near Bebington?

No, but it might go to SIE, therefore you can sleep easy in your cot, but the Fave bean did. Mr D made his comment elsewhere :):):)

    cheers
