Can you help me with the id of this bird. My guess is a male Gadwall, but I'm not even sure of the sex. Are they both the same species and sex?
If it helps, the photo was recently taken near Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Yup, both male gadwall. The white speculum (the part of the wing that is blue in Mallards) in a dabbling duck is diagnostic for Gadwall. In good light these are very dashing looking ducks.
Easy to ID if you just move front to back. Black bill, brown head, gray body, black butt = male Gadwall.
