    Hi

there are nearly 5 million pairs of these in the UK

I took this shot way back in the Summer; indeed it was my first shot with the 100-400IS

    Canon 40D 100-400
    FL 400
    SS 1/800
    f 5.6
    ISO 400

I notice the image appears darker when posting; on my monitor in PS5 all the details are nice and clear; any suggestions?

A nice one Richard! I like the 'terracotta' background. As presented it looks a bit soft, but that could be the web quality. The tip of the beak looks a bit hot too, tough exposure with the black bird, but hopefully an easy fix. I think you could go for more noise reduction/blur on the background, and I see a faint grid pattern that you could probably hide even better.

Hi Richard. I'm not sure if you are working with 16-bit files in CS5, but saving to JPEG will take you down to 8 bits. With only 8 bits you may lose some detail in the darks. As pointed out above, I would tone down the beak. And I wish the head was angled a little more towards us.

On my screen the blacks look pretty good -- maybe just a bit dark in the belly, but good detail in the wings. The bill could certainly be toned down a notch. Might wish for the head to turn just a little. It might be that the bird could benefit from just a tiny bit of s/h and usm, but not much; I'm curious what others will say. I've also experienced some loss of clarity when posting; but just when I think that the answer is to oversharpen slightly prior to posting, the next one looks oversharp. Who knows?

    Hi Doug and Bill

Indeed I do work in 16 bit so that's probably the reason.

btw I am off to Panama for 3 months in early Feb so I need to take all the great tips from here , put them into practice and take the shots right in the first place lol:) but I am pretty pleased that the shots Im taking now are much better, these were taken some time ago. Mind you the weather is appalling here in the UK at the moment

    thanks again

Richard, Nice details and Doug's suggestion to tone down the beak is a good one. I do wish the head were turned slightly more towards us. I might run some NR in the BG. I think the darks look ok on my monitor too.:)

Default Hooray for the Canon 100-400!

Congrats on a fine lens and the first image! I like this and enjoy the BG and the black details on the feathers: upper body. Looking forward to your Panama posts w the 100-400 (I'll be there in April!) with my 100-400. I am a certified Daniel Cadiuex 100-400mm "groupie" I learn quite a bit from his work w this lens. TFS, ann

    Hi

I may be in Darien at that time; depends how fit I am after 6 weeks in Chirriqui (Western) area by then. Just to say this was the first pic I took with the lens when I got it ; have been using for a year, and I find it very good, actually just added the 1.4 II Canon converter which is whole new ballgame. Daniel is a great mentor, though we have never met.
have a wonderful trip, those forest birds will have you on your toes for sure!

I like the pose and perch and that BG color is very interesting. Details look good to me and I agree with toning down the beak.

    BG is actually brick houses

so beak toned down and a little yellow added as whole beak is normally yellow in this bird
ran NR, on pic and brought back with History Brush on bird, and USM again

did anyone see the clone out of the window frames to the left of the bird, bit messy when viewed like this!

I had wondered, since the grid pattern didn't show up on the left, but you did a good job IMO. Do you have a trellis in the bkg, or maybe it's the side of a building? I'm thinking it must be something physical since it leans left. I'd expect a sensor/software induced artefact to be perfectly horizontal and vertical.

yes there is a building behind, as I said earlier, in fact I just went and looked at the scene; what's interesting is the uniformity of the grid which doesnt seem to match the one on the pic.
I had thought sensor myself but nothing to worry about there as you say. What I didnt know is just how one can see how an image has been err... mastered
