    Default Puerto Rican Tody

One of our endemic birds. I shot this back in July but will post just to get active again after being away for a bit due to health.
I think this is a bit over sharpened and haven't re-worked the shot yet, this was uploaded right after I began using LR3 and I didn't realize LR was giving me another sharpening at upload after I already had done my normal work. That little detail has been eliminated.
Photo was taken in dense forest with small amounts of sunlight shinning through.

Nikon D200, 600mm, f/5.6, 1/160, 100 ISO, with fill flash and flash extender

Interesting looking little bird. I'll agree that it's somewhat oversharpened. The fill flash works well here, looks very natural.

Thanks for sharing this cute little guy Fred. Your self critique has taken care of my only nit.

What a cute little bird! Love the iridescence. Good comp, any tighter would be too much but OK as is. Awesome BG. I agree it is oversharpened, and I would tone down the bright areas of the perch. Even if currently parallel I think a tad better HA towards us would have strenghtened the pose.

Since you are using flash as fill only (and not to freeze motion), wouldn't you want to give yourself more SS by upping the ISO?

    Thanks to everyone!

Daniel, if I'd been using my D3s there would have been no hesitation to increase the ISO. With the D200 though it's a different story, as it is an older camera that is using a CCD sensor. While I love the details it can capture, I've found even ISO 200 to be just passable and above 200 I've always ended up deleting the photos. I'm sure someone will read this and say higher ISO can be done with this camera and they can be, but I just don't like the shots at higher levels out of this camera.
I agree on the bright spots on the perch, and when I re-work this shot I'll equal out the light. Getting the correct head angle is difficult, I got four good shots of this bird during this shoot and a few worse shots recently. These birds are fast and don't stop very often in their chasing of insects. I usually can get three to four shots before they are gone, and a lot of times they are looking straight up, watching for flying insects.
