This photo was taken at my backyard feeder during the summer. The males would always fight for position on the feeders, and would often pull away from the feeders to check for intruders. That is when I snapped the shutter.
Taken with a Nikon D40 and Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lens @ 200mm.
1/500, f/3.2, ISO 400
Fantastic shot for a number of reasons. You captured the feathers under the throat all lit up. You managed a great shot without flash (flash can be a pain to set up correctly). You managed to avoid the 'flinch' that these birds can perform when they hear the camera shutter being accuated (when using such a short focal length lens). I assume you have quite a few birds so that probably increased your chances. I often only have juvenile birds to work with, and rarely adult males like this one. I am envious.
Thanks Christopher! I do not use any flash with my hummingbird shots. It is really tough to get it spot on, and it scares the bird off more times than none. I do have quite a few birds around. I shoot for about an hour everyday in the morning. This is the time that the light is best and they are the most active.
