Great calling pose...you even got the tongue! I suspect you were a little underexposed with those settings; I'd probably go a little lighter than this. You might also consider trading a little shutter speed for more DOF; I don't think you'll be less sharp at 1/3200.

The open beak with the visible tongue puts this up a notch, and I like the banking angle. I always use a + EC when shooting up to the sky. I believe some TLC in pp work will make this pop a little more.

Your right on all counts. At the time I made this shot I was, of course concentrating on the white snow geese, and my settings were fine in that case. I was doing a test to see what kind of sharpness I can get at wide open, and I wanted to be sure I eliminated motion blur from the test so I took the shutter speed high. I could not make the re-adjustment fast enough for this darker bird, but my histogram shows no clipped dark tones, so I think I can brighten this image. By the way, I was amazed how sharp 5.6 could still be. I must have been right in the zone on this.

Your focus must have been SPOT ON for this about of detail. I really like the open mouth. Nice to know you can shoot wide open and still get these stunning results. I'm a little reluctant to shoot wider than f/7.1 at 840mm.
