Here is my version of Chinese inspired painting... (Dan, I have not followed any of the rules!) This is the recreated Emperor's Palace in Xian. I cloned out people, the fountains and transmission poles, wires etc... :o Used DAP and Topaz simplify and then used adjustment layers to get the final effect. Hope you like it...

Very nice Indranil! I have actually been there, standing at that spot! Cool, it brings back memories of a great trip!

As for the theme, this is Chinese but as you say, no rules followed! I have recently been attempting Chinese landscape painting and if I were to paint this scene "following the rules" I would have applied many shades of gray/black as an underpainting of the line detail and the shadow detail. Then added multiple shades of all the colors needed. So, it looks like if you added some gray/black line work here and there and some blacks to the darkest shadow areas, plus a chop and/or calligraphy, (although you do have the calligraphy on the rock which is nicely placed in the image!) you would have what would be close to a very traditional Chinese landscape painting, FROM CHINA!

Thanks Dan. This is very helpful. Here is a rework of the image with your suggestions...

Indranil, This may not be "authentic" in the reproduction of a Chinese landscape painting but it is beautiful! I love the colors and the reflection. It must have been fantastic to see in person.:)

Thanks Denise. It was great to be in person to see it. Btw, i am not sure if you saw the repost based on Dan's recommendation... We were posting at the same time.

I like the repost but the OP is my favorite. The quality of light in the first one is so clear and bright - I really prefer that to the toned down version.

Comp-wise, could see a slight smidge more at the very top of the frame as the ULC is really pushing the edge.

Everything else is fantastic, Indranil. Wow, what a breathtaking image!

I too favor the ORIG post. I would love it see that one with a bit stronger on the effects. IAC, it is very loverly as presented.

Indranil, this re-work of your op is sort of what I had in mind. I produced an edge mask on a dupe layer, stroked it with black, then erased it selectively. Then I selected a sponge brush and, varying the opacity of black, added black and gray touches here and there to try to give back some depth. I don't know if it is a success but it was fun and now I can compare it with your posts and see what everyone thinks!

Indranil, this is a very strong image and all the versions are nice. I like your original post and Dan's version the best. Nicely done.

I guess I'll have to be different. I like the first repost the best, but just by a tad. They are all excellent paintings.
