I love this spectacular species. Good EXP and sharpness and I love the distant BKGR. The head is turned slightly away (while the bird's body is angled slightly towards us....) The blurred primaries on the near wing are distracting especially because everything else is so sharp. Lastly, had that same near wing been in the full up position the shadow there would have been eliminated.

    Pieter,

One of my favorite things about stopping in at BPN before supper is to see dramatic images of birds I've never heard of. I love the name Goliath Heron....how appropriate. The treetop background really works well with the sky and the spindly heron is in a neat mid-air pose. Nice one.

Beautiful colored bird and I love the flight pose. I also see a halo around it.

    Very nice heron and light!

Agree with Arthur about the head turn but still love this one.

    Pieter,

One of my favourite birds beautifully captured, whilst there are some minor rechnical nits, I like this a lot.

I have a few flight shots of this bird but none up to the standard of this one, great stuff.

Thanks all for your comments, much appreciated.

Arthur thanks for the pointers which will help in future, should have upped the SS which may have eliminated the blurred primaries. Duane thanks will fix the halo.

Hi Pieter, great capture of a Goliath, especially in flight, as we normally see them fishing. Sharp where it counts with natural colours, and the tiny piece of foliage adds. Nicely separated from the BG too.
