Default 7D & 5D Mark II small but important upgrade

Apparently Canon is going to allow 7D and 5D Mark II owners to upgrade (for $100) the mode dial on their cameras to the locking variety found on the new 60D. Hard to believe, but they're not going to change the dial on the production line. This has always been near the top of my annoyance list with the XXD and 7D bodies. Here's a link.

    Thanks for the update Doug.

I hope it is better then the type they had on the old Canon A2 - A2E models as it was the number one repair item on them! The dial broke on both my A2 & A3E cameras, the lock would snap & the dial would go into a free spin and not lock on any one mode, and cost about 100.00 to repair!

I feel like they want me to pay to fix a design defect

Unfortunately, Here is what they said when I asked if the new mechanism is like the old one...

    Dear Cal Walters:

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon
customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your EOS 7D.
    We apologize for any inconvenience.

The locking mechanism is very similar to the older camera models, with a
center release button to unlock the dial to turn it.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your EOS
    Digital Rebel.

    Thank you for choosing Canon.

I have never had a problem with the mode dial on the 5D II. It does not get changed unexpectedly when I use it.
