    Default American Bittern Habitat

This is the first American Bittern I have been able to photograph in about 3 years because it is so reclusive and blends into the bulrushes in the wetlands. I found it about an hour before sunset at Green Cay today.

Congratulations! I've been working on photographing this bird myself, without any luck. I love the detail and typical head angle you've captured. Overall, it looks a bit bright on my monitor.

I'm also voting on toning it down...might pull back the yellow cast while you're at it. It's okay to give the appearance of "golden light" but you don't want to take a bath in it!

Nice HA and position. A little lower (eye level) angle and less distractions in the BG would have made this image stronger but I think you did the best with what you were given. You might try to tone down the lighter foliage in the BG so it doesn't pull the eye away as much.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Jule, thanks for your comments. This is not the "appearance" of golden light, it is a JPEG right out of the camera, cropped for composition only. Here is the untouched original. This is the late afternoon south Florida sun.

Here is the image without the golden cast for your comments. They are much appreciated.
