    Default Buffalo Abstract

Something I discovered in my files from our December 2009 Kruger trip...

This is full frame, cropped slightly from below and left...conversion done in Nik Silver Efex.

In hindsight I wish I'd stopped down to f8 for more DOF, but in some ways I think this works well with the focus just on the eye...would love your thoughts?

    Techs:
    Nikon D300s with 200-400mm VR @ 400mm
    f4.0 @ 1/60 SS @ ISO-640
steadied on beanbag over car window

Like this B&W conv here Morkel, DOF sits OK with me. The coarse ear hairs really enhance here.
Would have liked to see a bit more of the horn as well, but I guess that may have given another perhaps distracting BG layer?

Works for me Morkel, although some added dof to get some sharpness in the muzzle would have been nice. There appears to be some 'crud' hanging in the ear hairs which looks like old fashioned hair on the sensor, but may have been on the buffalo. However it got there, it looks like it doesn't belong. :)

Good looking b/w conversion Morkel. I like the dof as presented as you are drawn to the eye immediately. As Marc has mentioned a little more horn might be nice but it works well as presented. Well done.

I like this one Morkel because it's different in composition and the B/W medium was the right route to take IMHO. The horn I am 50/50 on, but agree with Hilary that I would like to have seen more DOF so ALL the head was sharp, from ear to nose & hairs. Might like to tone down some of those white spots on the body perhaps.

Could see this working as a DPS, sorry double page spread.

Very strong image IMO and I like it with the focus on the eye, though having the whole head sharp woould be better. B&W conversion is the way to go for sure. Well done.

DOF works for me here, as it focusses on the eye. I like the detail of the hair on the ear.

Morkel, DOF works for me as well. Excellent detail in range of focus. I like the perspective, and conversion was a good choice here. Well done.

thanks for the honest comments everyone - really appreciate it.

I do wish I'd included just a sliver more horn here...next time eh? :)
